My next stop of note here in Reykjavik is Hallgrimskirkja, a Lutheran Church and one of the tallest structures in the country at 244ft. In front of the church, a statue of explorer Leif Erikson stands watch over the nation. The entire image of the church is quite breathtaking.
As I understand it, the church's construction took over forty years to complete. It is supposedly a combination of architectural styles, but the wings of the tower are meant to resemble the columnar basalt formations that are fairly common in this land of fire and ice. Inside the church, the decor is Spartan-like, which is somehow fitting for the tough people of this country. Two large pipe organs were constructed within the church. It's really quite an interesting structure that honors both the ancient and the modern.
