Red Top Mountain (Bartow County, Georgia)

Gearing up for an upcoming backpacking trip, I decided to join one of the Meetup Groups today for some miles at Red Top Mountain State Park, which is about an hour from my house. I haven't been hiking with the Meetups much as of late for a number of reasons, but as I entered the parking lot and saw several familiar faces, it was great to be with them again today.

After our customary round of introductions, we quickly hit the trail from the visitor center parking lot and headed north out onto one of the many peninsulas jutting out into Lake Allatoona. The trails at this park are well maintained and we keep a good pace. The views of the lake are very nice, as always.

Along the way, we get to talking about numerous topics, which makes the miles even more enjoyable. We complete the Homestead Trail and then continue south to hike the Iron Hill and Sweetgum Trails.

None of these trails are all that challenging, but this is just a warm-up for later this week. As almost always, it's the company that makes the hike more enjoyable.

Towards the end of our outing, the organizer begins doing a little bushwhacking, which suits me fine. It's obviously not ideal for some of the ladies towards the back of the group though as they begin complaining loudly. Honestly, this was a very mild bushwhack compared to some of the stuff this group has done in the past. Ah well, someone will always complain about something.

We soon end up back at the parking lot and say our goodbyes to most of the group. It was a pleasant hike and I'm glad to have gotten in about 9.8 miles on this fine day. After the hike, a few of us end up at a self-serve brewery for some snacks and beverages. Overall, it was a very fun afternoon.
